China – Beijing
The First Leg of the journey
At 2:35pm I will land in Beijing, the capital of the Peoples Republic of China. Aside from our fundamental differences on the role of government, China is a civilisation that has been well ahead of the bell curve up to the 1800′s. They where blowing things up and embarking on massive construction projects (i.e. the Great Wall) while the Brits where preying to trees, the Americas where still controlled by native Indians and Australia was one big walkabout.
The Great wall is by far the biggest draw card for china. A Structure that was built in sections to hold back, and cement the capture of land from the Mongols. It is a monumental achievement and wonder of the construction world to rival the Giza Pyramids.
Train Journey – Beijing to Lhasa
The second leg, as it were will involve taking a trip on the highest railway in the WORLD. Rising to just above 5000m the train comes with its own oxygen supplies and face masks for travellers. Taking 3 days and crossing the width of China the train will deliver me in style (oh yes) to Lhasa, the capital of the Chinese province of Tibet.
Bike Ride Time!
So from Lhasa I head off on a 1200km bike ride. Yes 1200km. During the journey the accomadation is a mix of hostel & camping – to be honest I would love to just camp every night, but the highest point, 5150m above sea level, we stop for the night overlooks Mt Everest – There I hoe to get a night shot of the tallest mountain in the world.
